Regional and international organizations are dismayed by the apparent attack this week by the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, on Guatemala\u2019s International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), regarding the country\u2019s forthcoming presidential elections. Almagro\u2019s comments, made in a tweet, expressed that the country\u2019s electoral commission (TSE) must be allowed to work \u201cwithout the influence of external factors, including CICIG.\u201d<\/p>\n
We call upon Secretary General Almagro to retract his statement unjustifiably denigrating CICIG, to support CICIG\u2019s ongoing work, and to ensure the OAS is impartial in monitoring the Guatemalan electoral process.<\/p>\n
